As an individual of Japanese descent, Endo focused his works on the promotion of Christianity to specifically a Japanese non-Christian audience due to its failure to be nurtured on Japanese soil. A Life of Jesus highlights many of the significant aspects of Jesus’ life. To begin with, Endo describes the environment of Nazareth that Jesus was raised in. Following the path of his father Joseph, Jesus also became a carpenter. However, upon hearing the calling of John the Baptist who denounced the Jewish establishment of the Pharisees and Sadducees, Jesus turned in his trade for a calling that appealed to his heart. Without knowledge of John serving as the precursor to Jesus becoming the Messiah, Jesus joined the religious community of John. Although Jesus became a prominent figure among the religious following of John, Jesus refrained from being assertive. He longed for the message of a God of unconditional love, but he could not promote that under John the Baptist who preached of a God of vengeance. Due to the threat that John the Baptist caused the Romans and Jewish leaders, he was put to death. Following the death of John the Baptist, his disciples now turned to Jesus and conjured an image of Jesus leading them to independence just as they envisioned John would. This false pretext of following Jesus would lead him to the same fate as his predecessor.

After reading and analyzing this novel, I would highly recommend this book to any individual whether he/she is a biblical scholar or an atheist. It presents Jesus’ life in a way that can be appreciated and respected by individuals of all faith backgrounds. This book has shed more light on the life of Jesus and his struggle to enlighten those around him with the unconditional love of God.
