Is Violence In Schools Increasing Or Decreasing? And Is This Affecting Students Rights?Westwood High School is a public school in Winterhaven, Washington. For fifteen years now Winterhaven has been your typical small, home-town of about 6,500residents. Recently Winterhaven has been ?Discovered? by the Seattle residents and now the population has tripled to 30,000 residents. With all this population growth Winterhavens? high school has also had a major increase, but the school has no money to enlarge it, so the students are stuck in this high school in portable classrooms. Winterhavens high school has gone through a dramatic change. Dr. Michael Jensen, Winterhavens new principal, had recently been a drug enforcement coordinator at other high school campuses. Dr. Jensen had a locker search performed and found a handgun, two pellet guns, small bags of marijuana in six lockers, three cases of beer; among sixteen lockers, two foil-wrapped packages of crack cocaine, four knives, two clubs, four bottles of hard liquor, and seven bottles of wine. Dr. Jensen is now proposing that the Winterhaven Valley Governing Council approve of his proposals which are: that all vehicles on campus be subject to search, students and staff wear photo
Winterhaven is not the only high school that has been having issues with safety, concerning guns, knives, and physical violence. Many schools around the country have been attended Mansville Florida High School. He too graduated in 96? and his high school was a fairly good high school too. My first question for them was their feelings on searches. Two said that they would be ok with it and two said that they would not be ok with it at all. All four of the people I interviewed had no major problems in their school. They were average schools as far as violence goes. The biggest problems they had seemed to be drugs. I interviewed two people from Morton High School, one from two different high schools in Peoria, and the fourth from a high school in Florida. All four high schools seemed to have the same type of violent activities going on, gang fights, cafeteria fights, and drug usage. My high school in Knoxville Illinois is just the same without the getting caught action and metal detectors going into effect. Three of the high schools had metal detectors, leaving Morton without any. My interviews were from 96? to 03?.Time did not seem to change much.
