Our Faith In Myth

To move forward we must look back. So what are we looking back at? What have we always used to learn from and move forward with besides the cold hard facts? The answer put simply is mythology. Myths are universal and they help us understand our existence in the world. Myths are passed down from generation to generation and with all of today’s technology it is easier to document and preserve the myths to be passed down. Our human society as we know today has survived and thrived through myths. Whether through literature, film, music, art or religion myths will proceed into the future and beyond because the first impulse to mythology is “ the recognition of mortality and the requirement to transcend it” (Leeming, 11). Human society without myth is not possible because it is embedded in our history and will continue to transcend to the end of time.

As far back as we can follow, signs have been found which indicate that mythology has been shaping the arts and the world of Homo sapiens. For example, “when we consider the psychological character of our species, the most evident distinguishing sign is man’s organization of his life according primarily to mythic, and only secondarily economic, aims and laws” (Campbel

In conclusion a myth is a story that tries to interpret some aspect of the world around us. Myths have been used for centuries and have helped form human society as we know it today. Through movies, literature, film, art and religion, myths have formed a common bond between races and sexes. Myths have shaped the life in which human society has evolved. It could be as blatant as a proverb in the Bible or an excerpt from the Torah, or as subtle as a moral learned from the latest Hollywood movie. We take these myths and make them our own. We use them to look back on how things were and to look forward to see how things might be. Myths are not going anywhere as long as human beings yearn for something else other than the cold hard facts. So with that said, the human society cannot be without myths because it is embedded in our history as a human race and shall transcend into the future and to the end of time.

Another reason why myth is a pillar stone in today’s human society is religion. Religion has been around for centuries and will be around for centuries more. “The entire history on which our leading Occidental religions have been founded is an anthology of fictions and myths” (Leeming, 42). Religious beliefs are used universally and are the basis
