             The definition of civil disobedience is therefusal to obey governmental demands or commands especially as a nonviolent and usually collective means of forcing concessions from the government.? It has been argued that the most successful use of civil disobedience was seen during the days of Dr. Martin Luther King. Dr. King had a theory of how and when civil disobedience was the right course of action to take. His most elaborate explanation of this theory is written in his essay entitledLetter from Birmingham Jail.? In the essay he discusses in great detail every aspect that relates to civil disobedience. Many written works correspond with his views. One play that displays a relative theory is the Greek playAntigone? written by Sophocles, one of the greatest thinker's of his time.Antigone? has some of the same thoughts and ideas thatLetter from Birmingham Jail? suggest. Although there are some similarities to Dr. King's views, the playAntigone? does not precisely parallel his theory. .

             Martin Luther King'sLetter from Birmingham Jail?, is an essay that was written from a jail cell in 1963 to the clergymen of Alabama. King was in jail for protesting in a march. In the essay King gives his theory on civil disobedience in order to explain to the clergymen the injustices that he had encountered, and his purpose for his protest. King describes precisely the method to take when displaying civil disobedience. He discusses his definition of civil disobedience; what qualifies as an injustice; when civil disobedience should be performed; and the appropriate steps and course of action.

             He outlines his method of civil disobedience through four steps: collection of facts; negotiation; self-purification; and direct action. He also outlines what he would consider a valid purpose to take these steps; his motive, or catalyst that puts into motion these actions.
