Napolean and Washington

Both George Washington and Napoleon Bonaparte were famous leaders of revolutions. Young Washington was much interested in military art. At 22 he fought the first battle which then grew into the French and Indian war. Napoleon, at an early age, aspired to the army, where you actually need no special gifts, but young Napoleon did have. Military affairs were an allure and talent to both; they are quite different though in terms of character, leadership and contribution.

We all know the story of the cherry tree, from which Washington grew famous for his honesty. He is also a modest leader. As the appointee of the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army in 1775, he proclaimed, “I do not think myself equal to the command I came honoured with.” All the time he just considered himself a citizen defending his country.

At the age of 27, Washington married Martha Dandridge Custis, a wealthy widow and mother of two children. The couple had no children together, but Washington raised those of his wife as his own. This proved Washington’s kindness and generosity.

Needless to say, Washington was a popular leader, firm, endurable and persevering. In May of 1775, just after the combats in Lexington and concord, Washington sh

It wasn’t Washington’s generalship that made him stand out. Rather, it was the way he attended and stuck by his men. For eight years he led them and convinced them to fight on, even when they sounded losing. His soldiers knew he respected them and cared for them, and that he would share their sever hardships. “My brave fellows, you have done all I asked you to do,” he once insisted, “and more than could be reasonably expected, but your country is at stake: your wives, your houses, and all that you hold dear. You have worn yourselves out with fatigue and hardships, but we know not how to spare you.”

“Soldiers, you are undernourished, raggedy… I’ll take you to the richest place on earth… There you will achieve glory, fame, plunder… Do you have the courage to follow me?“

Napoleon carried an obvious sense of pride and ambition, which contrasted sharply with Washington. He said, “It is the success which makes great men,” and “Even when I am gone, I shall remain in people's minds the star of their rights, my name will be the war cry of their efforts, the motto of their hopes.” He even crowned himself Emperor. However Napoleon’s downfall was also partly due to his pride and excessive courage, which led to stubbornness forcing him to go ahead with doubtful plans.

Washing was one of the most beloved President and Napoleon proved to be an excellent civil administrator. In the area of education, Washing donated money to assist the colleges and universities, primarily because he understood the importance education had in helping the economy recover. Apparently Napoleon built the Imperial University to administer French education simply out of the interest and spirit of learning. Specialized engineering and technological school were established to ensure scientific education. Napoleon also fostered literature and arts.
