Certain night and in a grove

The authors of gCertain Nighth and gIn a Groveh articulate the theme and effect in the story by the use of literary devices, such as characterization, setting/atmosphere, and point of view. Even though Ting Ling and Ryunosuke Akutagawa use the same literary devices, the outcome of the effect on the story is not quite the same while the theme is the same. The two stories@have similar characterization and settings, one creating the same effect and the other creating different effect, but in contrast have different point of views.

The characterizations used by both authors create a theme, the humanfs pride, which joins the two stories together. The wife of the murdered man from gIn the Groveh says,

I stabbed the small sword through the lilac-colored kimono into his breastcI stabbed my own throat with the small sword, I threw myself into a pond at the foot of the mountain, and I tried to kill myself in many ways. The depressing and gloomy atmospheres are shown throughout by both of the stories portrayed by the setting creating different effects for each story. gIn a Groveh shows this in the sentence gYes sir. Certainly, it was I who found the body. This morning, as usual, I went to cut my daily quota of cedars, when I found the body in a grove in a hollow in the mountainscItfs an out-of-the-way grove of bamboo and cedarsh(502)

The heavy tramp of boots and shoes in the thick snow. The ferocious wind of a winterfs night lashing their faces with the rain that had been falling for a fortnight and with large snowflakes. The sudden onslaught of the cold wind made them all shiver in their hearts, but they tramped on (532)

The communists are more graceful than sorrowful when they are about to be killed. This shows that they have pride being and dieing as a communist because they believe that the congress is going to change the country into a communist nation and everyone will thank them. Characterization allows the character in the story to have a personality and in this case both stories have pride in them, which is the theme of the story.
