For this lab, I chose to duplicate number three of the scientific method lab in the lab manual. For this experiment, I am investigating the factors that cause a person to take a breath. I’ve observed that most people can only hold their breath for a short period of time, which led me to the question: What factor causes a person to take a breath? My hypothesis to that question goes along with the one in the manual in that it’s the build up of the carbon dioxide from the body’s metabolic activity that stimulates us to take a breath. If the hypothesis is correct, then people will hold their breath a shorter time just after exercise compared to when they are at rest.
First, I gathered three other girls on my floor to participate in this experiment. I took them into my room and had them a
ll sit down and watch tv for about five minutes, to make sure they were completely at rest. Using a wrist watch, each person began holding their breath as I watched the time and recorded my results. Then, once each person had finished, I waited five more minutes to allow them to catch their breath. Then, we headed down to the main lobby where each person will take their turn running up all ten flights of stairs to the fifth floor, where I will be waiting with my watch to time how long they are able to hold their breath. Then, I will compare those results to the times recorded earlier and look to see if my hypothesis was correct or not. The variables involved in this experiment are the time the subjects are able to hold their breath, which is the independent variable, and the amount of exercising done that effects their
