Gender differences in body image and specific aspects of body image as affecting self-esteem, variants by gender.
This study was designed to investigate whether there are differences between men and women in an individual’s attitude to their own body. It was hypothesized that there would be a difference based on gender and that these differences would affect the individual’s self-esteem in different ways depending also on gender. There were 120 participants, 60 men and 60 women all between the ages of 18-25. The Ben-Tovim Walker Body Attitudes Questionnaire was used to examine body image and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale was used to assess self-esteem. Results showed that there was a difference in men and women’s attitudes to their bodies, and that different aspects of their bodies affect self-esteem for men and for women.
