A Clockwork Orange: Should Evil Be Sympathized With?

Isn’t it strange that someone can take part in the most malicious acts and be punished for it, but people still will have something inside of them that feels sorry for that same one? There can be many reasons for this reaction and one may be that the full presentation of the sinful person can produce another outlook on his or her actions. In A Clockwork Orange, Alex is very much seen as an evil person because of his violent and shocking behavior. Even though this young man seems immoral, one could react more sympathetically than he or she otherwise might because his full character is being portrayed and the reaction is very significant to the author’s purpose of conveying the theme that it is necessary for free will for humanity.

Alex of London is definitely the epitome of immorality. He is a fifteen year old young adult who enjoys robbing, beating, and raping innocent people. At the opening of the story, Alex and his gang (Pete, Georgie, and Dim) have severely beaten and robbed an elderly man. “Pete held his rookers [arms] and Georgie sort of hooked his rot [mouth] wide open for him and Dim yanked out his false zoobies [teeth].” When the old man’s teeth had hit the hard pavement, Alex has finished it off by cr

ushing them with his boot. (9) This shows the horrible nature of Alex’s crimes.

Later on when Alex would listen to music he would get sick and hate it. This shows that these forced actions being placed upon Alex causes him to lose the only thing he loves. Countless people can express sympathy for him because one of his only human qualities are gone.

After the members of the small gang have beaten the man and taken his money, they then go to a bar where they sit by some old women. Instead of ordering something for himself, Alex tells the bartender to “give [those] poor old baboochkas [old women] over there a nourishing something.” (11) He ends up spending all of his money on the aged women. This shows that Alex doesn’t beat and rob people because he is in need of money, but for the simple fact that it is fun to him.

Nevertheless, the sympathetic reactions of people towards Alex are significant because their purpose is used to convey the author’s two themes of the necessity of free will for humanity, and original sin presides over environmental behaviorism. Alex’s free will of listening to classic music is taken away and illness is given to him by reform doctors who want to force him to become good. Also, even though Alex is young, he is also evil by nature and not because of how he is being raised or where he lives.

Also, after leaving the milk bar to go to his house, the music fanatic goes home to listen to some more of it. While listening to it he
