Advertising is a message designed to promote a product, a service, or an idea. It is a multibillion-dollar industry in the United States. More than $200 billion is spent on advertising and advertising-related activities in the United States each year. About $400 billion is spent on advertising in other countries (aolsvc). A six-question questionnaire was created to research the advertising styles of different public relations departments. Fourteen companies of different sizes received a letter through the mail explaining why this research was being conducted. They also received a copy of the questionnaire with a return deadline. Four questionnaires were returned. The following reports on the findings of the questionnaire and the research done behind each particular question. The first question on the survey asked for the surveyed to specify the major types of advertising employed by their organization. The answer selection included the following choices, and the surveyed was asked to check all choices that applied to their organization: Retail advertising, trade advertising, business-to-business advertising, institutional advertising, product advertising, advocacy advertising, comparison advertising, interactive advertising, and
The sixth and final question included in the advertising survey asked how often the company being surveyed performed marketing research. The choices for answering this particular question were never, rarely, weekly, monthly, and yearly. The participants were also invited to specify exactly if they wished to do so. Question number three asked the surveyed if their particular company offered free products and/or services as part of their advertising campaign. The answers were either yes or no. The results of the questionnaire showed that the businesses that responded employed retail, trade, business-to-business, and product advertising the most. They also use institutional, interactive, and online advertising.
