A Quest for Life: Siddhartha

Throughout Siddhartha’s journey in life, he encounters many important life experiences. All of these play a significant part in forming his identity. Together his journeys form who he was and became to be. Most people live similarly in that they progress through stages of life that ultimately make them who they are. Siddhartha went through three main parts on his adventure. The first stage was the world of spirit and intellect. Secondly, encountered the world of senses and physical ness. In the end, he was able to find enlightenment between both worlds.

Siddhartha’s quest took his whole life to fulfill. Everyone searches for different pleasures in life, whether it is: money, power, fame, knowledge, peace, understanding of self, or just the thrill of adventure. Siddhartha searched for his place in society through personal experiences and following his own ideas. He looked for balance in life to reach enlightenment.

You have learned nothing through teachings, and so I think, O Illustrious One, that nobody finds salvation through teachings" (Siddhartha, 33-34).

Siddhartha had been trying to get away from himself this whole time. He tried to achieve other things not knowing why he avoided self. He realized self was exactly what he was looking for. He stated, “I will learn from myself, be my own pupil; I will learn from myself the secret of Siddhartha” (Siddhartha. 39).

As he lay near the river, the sound of Om reached his ears. Inspired by the word, Siddhartha feels like a new man. He had to experience displeasure to reach a higher level. As Siddhartha says, "I had to experience despair, I had to sink to the greatest mental depths, to thoughts of suicide in order to experience grace, to hear Om again, to sleep deeply again and to
