Of all of the achievements accomplished by Hammurabi, his Code of Law is by far the most memorable and significant achievement accomplished. The Code consisted of 282 laws, and although they were not the first created, they are known as the first physically recorded laws. Hammurabi basically extracted the effective laws from the previous Sumerian laws and altered and improved them. The laws intertwined an effort for fairness with tradition; he based the laws one of his key principals as emperor ‘the strong shall not injure the weak.’ Hammurabi tried to be a very fair and impartial leader, encouraging justice among his people. As Hammurabit developed his Code of Law gradually and thoughtfully, the people of his kingdom willing followed the new code. Hammurabi’s main changes to the traditional laws were that he included more rights to the individual classes of people within his empire and sought true justice. He was a ruler who genuinely cared for his people and recognized what would make them happy. Hammurabi also recognized that the happier the empire was internally, the stronger it can become externally. When uniting the empire’s people with a common law, it also united the people as a nation. Because an empire consists of many various views and opinions, by creating a common law and recording it, this also may have prevented many wars and disputes between the people. Therefore, with a calmer society comes a content society. Although Hammurabi’s’ code of law is not followed today as he may have liked, it has aided the structure of many features of society because almost every culture in modern times follows his principle of writing down laws.
