Israel Conflict
The Palestinian-Israeli conflict is an ongoing circle. Through the years and continuing into the present, it seems that every time one player makes a step toward peace another one of the players sabotages the peace process. There are many players who contribute to this never ending circle. Each so-called side, Palestinian and Israeli, is itself split into many groups. Neither Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu nor Palestinian Authority President Arafat has the undivided support of his people. Even the United States cannot come up with a clear plan to break this destructive cycle. In this essay, each of these dilemmas will be discussed.First, this conflict goes beyond the simple division of Palestinian versus Israeli. Within each of these groups are sub-groups with very different ideas of what would be an acceptable solution. The "land for peace" solution was first used by Israel and Egypt in the Camp David Accords in 1987. Israel gave Egypt the Sinai Peninsula and, in return, Egypt reco
Arafat, who has been for "land for peace," has had his life threatened by Palestinian extremists. Allowing Israeli building in East Jerusalem, Netanyahu has put Arafat in a terrible position. Arafat knows that the Islamic Jihad and Hamas will not be satisfied with the Israelis having any building in East Jerusalem. On the other hand, to resort to violence to get the Israelis to stop will not only ruin any peace process, but historically, the Palestinians have only lost land when they have attacked the Israelis. For example, the Palestinians were literally left without a country after the Israeli War for Independence in 1948-49 and Israel occupied the West Bank and the Gaza Strip as a result of the 6 Day War in 1967.
