My participation in various musical activities, such as marching band, jazz band, and church choir, has helped me to become disciplined, to be dedicated, and to raise my self-esteem. Music, whether classical or metal, has taught me many valuable lessons in life while still having fun.
Many "band geeks" could tell of numerous events during band camp that have caused sidesplitting laughter. Although we have had wonderful times, we have also been learning in the process. Band camp has given us endurance to hold a large baritone perpendicular to our body for ten minutes at a time. Discipline has helped us to march in-step and at a certain tempo to the point where we have been compared to a large army. Working together to form one band as opposed to many individuals has given our musical family a sense of self-achievement and shows off our hard work. Once we considered ourselves "band geeks", now we are referred to as "band scholars".
In an event called "Solo and Ensemble", individuals or groups perform before a number of judges. Having partaken in this occurrence, I have realized how important punctuality can be. Scores given reflect whether or not you are on time, prepared, and how well you can play. In preparation, months of dedication are required. Practice time is vital and also necessary. Many friends become even closer when offering suggestions about a number while in the process they are developing listening skills. My patience is tested as I wait for my score to be posted. After my rendition, a sense of personal enjoyment overcomes me and I strive to play faster and harder pieces. Performances such as this are many, allowing me to grow and learn each time.
