Legalize It

For a number of years, I have studied the pros and cons of the legalization of marijuana. It is my opinion that most of the reasons behind the continued illegal status of marijuana arise out of greediness of the ““higher ups,”” and consequential misinformation of the public. Marijuana has the potential to serve many purposes over and above its recreational usage. It can be used as an important medicine to treat and comfort suffering individuals. It can be used to replace anything currently made from cotton, timber, or petroleum. It can be used to make paper, textiles, construction materials, rope/twine, fuel and plastics. On top of all this, the enforcement of marijuana laws costs the taxpayer billions of dollars every year, and makes criminals out of otherwise law-abiding citizens.

Current laws have marijuana classified as a Schedule I Drug. This means it defines the substance as having a high potential for abuse, as having no currently accepted medical use in the United States, and as having a lack of accepted safety for use under medical supervision. More than 90 published reports and studies have shown marijuana is less addictive than many substances that free adults can buy at any grocery store. In fac

On the other side of the medical arguments regarding marijuana, are the accusations that marijuana is bad for a person’’s health. Accusations have been made that marijuana will cause long-term brain damage. Clinically, this never been proven. To the contrary, a college survey showed that the students who used the drug regularly tended to be high academic achievers (Terry Griffith ““Draft Of My Preliminary Research Report”” p1). Cannabis has also been said to impair short-term memory. This is true, but is not as serious a problem as it is made out to be. Studies have found that impairment of short-term memory desists when one is no longer under the influence of marijuana.

t, marijuana has been shown to be half as addictive as nicotine with only one fourth the level of withdrawal. Its and its level (severity) of addiction equals that of caffeine (Drug War Facts: Addictive Qualities of Popular Drugs chart). These studies also show that it has many valid medical uses, and that it is much safer when ingested by means other than smoking than the majority of prescription drugs that are currently prescribed for such things as nausea, and pain relief.

To the credit to those opposing the usage and legalization of marijuana, research has found that marijuana is harmful toward a user’’s body. Research has also found that eating red meat, smoking tobacco, consuming alcohol, sun bathing, and living in a major city are also harmful toward a person’’s body. The primary health concern regarding marijuana is the heightened risk of getting lung cancer. The method used to test
