New rules went into affect this fall called flexfunds; designating students a limited amount of money to spend at the Student Union’s dining area. These rules are extremely unfair to students paying the amount of money that they have on tuition. It basically boils down to the creation of the Union two years ago and the success it had. The great food the Union offered quickly attracted students and left the Residential dining units empty. Dr. Dalton, Senior Vice President of finance, is faced with a difficult decision that most likely will upset the students. The change in the Union’s flexfunds is a selfish maneuver by the University to recover debts that affected the residential dining. In fact, part of the logic of the flexfunds is that it will reduce the Union’s congestion of students using meal plans during optimal hours thus attracting real money from off-campus students, community members and faculty. I think it’s quite apparent that the students aren’t coming first in this manner. It’s understandable that the modern university is as much a financial institution as it is educational, although there are ways to address this other than punishing the students.
