Alcoholism: Death of a Generation
In the recent past alcohol has been considered by many people as a “problem solver,” and being that our nation is filled with problems and many people without consciences it’s the easiest route to follow. After beginning on your way down this route it’s easy to continue drinking and only put you further down the road. The further you bring yourself down that route the longer it takes to return back to a more stable and in my opinion, smarter life.To begin, the night I attended the Cannady’s party, hosted by their daughter Katie, many more things could have gone wrong. The least of which was the police coming to the house and giving everyone a sobriety test. Firstly, if I was to stay longer then I could have consumed a lot more alcohol and felt a lot worse. In correlation with, I could have become incredibly wild and out of control. Secondly, when leaving the party the person I was going to go home with could have been drunk. According to a drinking and driving website (http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/kids/research/drinking/index.cfm), every 30 minutes, someone in this country dies in an alcohol-related crash. I hope that everyone else at the party realizes that the parents were going to let kids leave and drive home
drunk! I mean what in your mind is letting your daughter’s friends allow that. It was a gift from God that I got caught drinking one beer that evening. Who knows what would have happened if the police hadn’t busted the party? In conclusion, justice should be served harder than anyone else to the Cannady family. In our society today, driving a car while intoxicated is one of the most dangerous things you can do. Your performance and reaction times are drastically cut. Not only can you yourself be killed, but also at any moment you may kill many others. A situation just like this could have occurred the night of the Cannady’s party. These effects according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism are poor coordination, slurred speech, double vision, and decrease of self-control, loss of consciousness and death. According to, (http://www.state.me.us/dps/Bhs/alcoholdriving.htm) about 1,058,990 people were injured in alcohol-related crashes, while preliminary estimates indicate that in 2000, there were 15,936 people killed in alcohol-related crashes. About three in every five Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related crash at some time in their life. To sum up, drinking alone is already dangerous enough, but incorporating it with driving is just complete inconsideration for the human life. Alcohol effects everyone in two ways, just like anything someone takes part in will; both emotionally and physically. To begin, alcohol brings about an incredible amount of health problems. These problems include memory loss, liver damage, (stomach, esophagus, mouth, throat, larynx) cancer, heart disease, poisoning over the brain, a range of birth defects, and pancreatitis. These facts are all according to (http://www.drugsuk.org/Drugs/alcohol_general_effects.html). I think, that if more people went out in public speaking about all of these effects, then people would take it to heart a lot more; I know I would. Next along with physical problems, emotional problems are just as prominent. When I and anyone else in this world drinks, we are on our own high, but only for a certain period of time. When we wake the following morning we are very tired and just want to rest. Even if we do sleep twelve hours we will still be tired. This causes a person to be depressed. This process goes into a continuous cycle and is tough to break. Depression builds, and the dependency for alcohol only grows. After a lengthy period of alcoholism, no rehabilitation or counseling will be able
