The background is dim so that the figures in the front stand out more, and the children are in a much better light than the jewels to symbolize their importance over material things. The visitor sitting down also attracts the viewer’s attention because she is wearing bright red. Even though one of the sons is also wearing red it does not attract the viewers attention because the son is not in the light and is covered by a shadow. The difference in colors makes both women stand out in the picture but also clearly shows their difference of opinions and values. The daughter in the middle of the painting is wearing pink as if to show the sides of both women since red and white combined make pink. She is holding her mother’s hand as if to support the love her mother feels for her, but she also has curiosity towards the jewels because she reaches over to examine them. Since she is in the middle of the two women and seems to support both values, pink is the appropriate color for her to be wearing. The scenery between the two columns is peaceful with the white and blue colors and seems to be the reason there is such good light on the mother. Angelica Kauffmann uses just the right colors and lighting in her painting to display the love and calmness of this painting.
