Biblical References of Solitude!!!
In the novel, One Hundred Years of Solitude, Gabriel Garcia Marquez used the motif of biblical references in order to outline the main theme of solitude in the novel. The characters Jose Arcadio Buendia, Ursula Iguaran, and Melquiades all had been symbolized by some kind of biblical character. These biblical references underline the reasons why it came to the downfall of some characters resembling the downfall of the whole Buendia family and Macondo. Jose Arcadio Buendia represented God quite temporarily and then came to represent Eve. In the beginning, he had founded Macondo and was its leader, a very good leader that wanted the best for his village, “Jose Arcadio Buendia, who was the most enterprising man ever to be seen in the village, had set up the placement of the houses in such a way that from all of them one could reach the river and draw water with the same effort, and he had like up the streets with suck good sense that no house hot more sun….” (p.9) Then there
Moreover, another character who is quite important has a great role in the novel, and the role is being the cause of the downfall of Macondo. Melquiades, representing God, had decided the fate of the family and Macondo. God wrote the ten commandments with his own finger. “Melquiades left… a set of notes and sketches concerning the processes of the Great Teaching that would permit those who could interpret them to undertake the manufacture of the philosopher’s stone.” (p.7) Melquiades wrote the parchments, just as Garcia had written this book, deciding exactly what will happen, when it will happen, and how it will happen. Playing this role of God, Melquiades represents Garcia, who knows what will happen, who planned it all out. The downfall of Macondo was planned out, but the point of view is what wasn’t planned out. However, Ursula Iguaran, representing Adam, was a character who had a different kind of downfall. Adam was the one who had tried to do what’s right
