FRANCIS COLLINS

Dr. Francis Collins is a man who has had many great achievements in the field of science. His most interesting and current project is the fifteen-year effort to map and sequence the human DNA to a level where they can locate every disease and where it is located on the DNA strand. With this information future scientist such as himself can develop cures and eliminate many common disease that plague the human race today! Another impressive fact about Collins project is that the effort is over two years ahead of planned and is well under the budget by over $400 million dollars. With so many accomplishments on such a large level I had no choice but to learn more about this great man. This paper will investigate the life and accomplishments of Dr. Francis Collins and his major scientific contributions.

Dr. Francis Collins was born and raised in a small town inside of Virginia. Francis was born the son of two very open-minded parents who always supported his interest in science. His childhood was spent on the small farm with his parents and three brothers where they home schooled Collins until the sixth grade. After his years of home schooling he went on to attend high school where he excelled and surpassed the other students in his

While at the University of Michigan Collins was contacted by the National Center for Human Genome Research and offered the position of director, which he gladly accepted. Asides from his work with the National Center for Human Genome Research Collins also founded a new research team of his own which is known as the National Human Genome Research Institute which is now one the leading labs in the area of human studies. The team assembled by Collins is currently working on the most important research attempt in human history. Collins and his crew are going to map the entire human DNA sequence also known as the book of life. The project, which is currently ahead of schedule and under budget by the amount of $400 million dollars was developed in 1990 and was expected to take fifteen years to complete, was successfully completed in the summer of 2003 two years ahead of schedule. But Collins claims that the project is no where near finished when you consider the fact that we only know where each disease, gene, and chromosome are located on the DNA strand; but we have no idea of how to cure the disease and fix the mutated genes.

Collins later attended many Universities where he earned his undergraduate degree in chemistry at the University of Virginia, a Ph.D. in physical chemistry at Yale University. Once he understood the potential for discovery in human genetics he attended the University Of North Carolina. While at the University Of North Carolina he attended medical school and graduated with the education needed for the pursuit of his future in Medical Genetics. After his college years Collins full filled his residency and served a chief residency position at an internal medicine center i
