Chronicle of a Death Foretold - The Death of Santiago

In this novel there are several factors that led to the death of Santiago Nasar. These several factors are shown through character actions, dialoged and characteristics. There’re also techniques and events that show the factors involved with Santiago’s death.

One of these factors is fate. In this novel there are several events that suggest that Santiago was fated to die on this day. One of these even that suggest this is how Placida Linero didn’t “…notice any ominous augury…” in Santiago’s dream. This significance of this is that Placida “…had a well-earned reputation as an accurate interpreter of other people’s dreams…”, this suggest that Santiago was fated to die as his own mother and clairvoyant could not predict the death.

Another example of fate is that everyone who was about to tell Santiago about his upcoming murder had been suddenly distracted by the Bishop. One example of a person getting distracted before telling Santiago about his death how Father Carmen Amador forgets to tell Santiago at the arrival of the bishop.

A third example of this fate is when Santiago’s mother locked the door. This event suggest a bit of irony as Santiago’s mother actually locked the door, thinking Santiag

A fourth factor is Pedro and Pablo Vicario own character. One of the first things to know note is how they were “…insomniac sleepwalkers…”. The fact that the twin brothers “…hadn’t stopped drinks since the eve of the wedding…” and haven’t slept in a long while indicates that Pedro and Pablo Vicario’s judgment was impaired. Also the town’s people own disbelief of the possibility of the murder also emphasizes this point

Another example is that “…most agree that the weather was funereal…” whereas Santiago “…remarked to all of them in a casual way that it was a beautiful day…”. There is the evidence of that Santiago interpretation of the weather was different then most agreed on but he remarked “…in a casual way…” signifying a certain degree of inattentiveness in Santiago.

Even the brother of the narrator said “…Who the fuck would ever think that the twins would kill anyone, much less with a pig knife…”. The total surprise and magnitude of emotion in this statement suggest that no one though the Vicario twins would actually kill Santiago and was a shock that they even did.

A minor factor that coincides with the Placida locking the door is dislike. The dislike of Santiago from Divina Flor who lied to Placida saying Santiago was in the house effectively caused Placida to close the door thus locking Santiago out. So the fact the Divina Flor didn’t like Santiago also caused him to die.

Also what a example of her as a factor in this murder is that she didn’t not fake her virginity when she could of by getting her husband drunk. “…she let herself get undressed openly in the lighted bedroom…”. In doing this Angela did the opposite of what was told of her implying she want it to be know that she
