Effects of Alcohol

Alcohol is the concentration of ethyl alcohol, which varies from about 4% in most beers to 40% in most liquor. The affects of ethyl alcohol are relaxation, as problems seem to go away. Side affects include mood swings, impairment of judgment, and slower motor skills. Alcohol is one of the few legal drugs that people use without thinking of the consequences. Some of the warning signs of problem drinking are gulping drinks, drinking to modify uncomfortable feelings, personality or behavioral changes after drinking. In addition to getting drunk frequently, experiencing “blackouts”, frequent accidents as a result of drinking, drinking before social gatherings where alcohol will be served, avoidance, preoccupation of alcohol, focusing social situations around alcohol, and sneaking drinks. The affect of alcohol as a drug depends on many factors. Some factors that can influence the affects are body weight, age, and the situation that person is currently in. Sometimes high school and college students find themselves in alcohol related situations called hazing. Hazing is to persecute or harass with meaningless, difficult, or humiliating tasks. (2) Of


Some of the statistics cited by S.A.D.D. are that more than five million high schoolers binge drink at least once a month, and four out of every five students (80%) have consumed alcohol before the end of high school. These statistics have been reported by the National Center for Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University. Coupled with the above statistics motor vehicle crashes remain the number one cause of death for youths ages 15 to 20 as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

There are many organizations around the country that do speaking engagements at high school’s in order to further educate today’s youth. One of these organizations is called S.A.D.D. also known as Student’s Against Drunk Driving or Student’s Against Destructive Decisions. There is a chapter of this organization located in our own Miller Place High School. The online resource of S.A.D.D. offers informational materials, news conferences, press releases for students and parents and scholarships.
