Functions of Law

Functions of the Law - Michael Jefkins.
In today's society it is often the long arm of the law that maintains the order needed to go about our lives. Many people often dismiss the law as unimportant as they will never have to be involved with a day in court. These people, however, are missing entirely the fact that, while law is handled most officially and with far more structure in the court room itself, the six main functions it provides everyone with are understood and take place in one's day to day life. These six functions are: the providing of remedies, the maintenance of order and providing of protection, the setting of rights and obligations, the ability to help avoid and settle disagreements, the direction of making laws themselves, and the set up of a government structure The movie "Exile" shows the view these six functions in a clear way for the viewer.
             .
In the movie, "Exile," remedies are provided to various situations that occur. A boy dies and the other children console the girl who has gone into shock because of it, helping her through the ordeal. .
Often in the movie, protection is provided. The first night they are on the island, they build a fire to ward off any danger creatures in the area. Later on, a jail is built to house the mean-spirited pilot from hurting the children, it protects them from him. Tommy builds a sling for protection, and lastly, feeds the "beasts" of the island in order to gain their favour and be safe from any harm.
There is a disagreement early on about the exploration of the isle. There is a disagreement but it is resolved when a third party steps in and makes a decision deciding that it is okay so long as they don't go off alone; this settles the dispute. Also, the kids ask the pilot nicely to leave, trying to avoid a dispute, even though it doesn't work, they again attempted to avoid the problem before it occurred.
Government is set up quickly on the island and decisions are made.
