Nationalism and ww1
June 28, 1914, was a day that most people considered to be the spark that led to the largest most dramatic war that the world has ever seen. It was the day that the heir to the Austrian throne, archduke Franz Ferdinand, and his wife were assassinated. This is what started the controversy between countries that would eventually lead to a major war. But why did the Bosnian man of Serbian descent do it? That is a question that people answer with one word, nationalism. So if you really dissect the reasons that led to the First World War, at the top of the list would be nationalism.(Twentieth Century,20,21) Nationalism started to make a dent in society in the late 1800’s and continued through the early 1900’s. By the time the war started it had already spread through most of the world. That is why I consider the assassination of archduke Franz Ferdinand to be a consequence that came about by the rapid spread of nationalism. To explain what I am referring to, you just have to look at the assassin himself, Gavril Princip. His reasoning for doing what he did was to see his country of Bosnia become part of a Greater Serbia. At this point in time they were stuck under the control of an unfavorable Austro-Hungarian empire
