Nationalism and ww1

June 28, 1914, was a day that most people considered to be the spark that led to the largest most dramatic war that the world has ever seen. It was the day that the heir to the Austrian throne, archduke Franz Ferdinand, and his wife were assassinated. This is what started the controversy between countries that would eventually lead to a major war. But why did the Bosnian man of Serbian descent do it? That is a question that people answer with one word, nationalism. So if you really dissect the reasons that led to the First World War, at the top of the list would be nationalism.(Twentieth Century,20,21)

Nationalism started to make a dent in society in the late 1800’s and continued through the early 1900’s. By the time the war started it had already spread through most of the world. That is why I consider the assassination of archduke Franz Ferdinand to be a consequence that came about by the rapid spread of nationalism. To explain what I am referring to, you just have to look at the assassin himself, Gavril Princip. His reasoning for doing what he did was to see his country of Bosnia become part of a Greater Serbia. At this point in time they were stuck under the control of an unfavorable Austro-Hungarian empire

. Why he wanted to join with Serbia was because they had received their independence close to thirty-five years earlier. Around the same time Bosnia was given to the control of Austria-Hungary. This was just one area in the world where nationalism was taking effect.(twentieth Century,94-96)

In my opinion this war was very preventable. Yes, it is true that nationalism was taking over and leading countries to war, but I don’t think that having loyalty for your country and having pride should lead to the death of ten million people. Nationalism was the root cause for this war, but it can be controlled, in this case there wasn’t much of an attempt to stop what was about to happen. And seeing that there is another war like this one in the near future, it shows that they did not learn their lesson.

In conclusion, the war all started with the assassination of archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife. That was what sparked the war, but nationalism was the real cause of it. It caused the assassination. As Nationalism spread, it led to a Great War between major powers in what is referred to as the First World War. With the United States joining the war in 1917, the power shifted to the allies, which led them to victory over Germany and the Triple Alliance. At the conclusion of the war there were an incredible amount of effects some of which left a lot of Europe in debt to the United
