Stereotypes are labels that are put on people to categorize them as a certain person. The basis of these labels could be put on them because of whom they talk to, what they wear, how they talk or basically anything that stands out about them. While there are things that are positive about certain stereotypes there are also negative aspects. A common stereotype that was applied to me was “good girl.” While this stereotype had advantages its disadvantages were very overwhelming.
Being stereotyped as a good girl had many advantages: I was viewed as a respectable person and trusted by many. Being viewed as respectable was very rewarding. Being respected made me look and feel good. In turn I gained self-confidence and the courage to state my views and opinions. My name was never degraded or denounced. I was seen as the girl who did no wrong. Not a single bad incident was thought of when my name was mentioned. One day of my ninth grade year I was called out of class and into the attendance office. Even though I knew I had not done anything wrong I still had butterflies in my stomach. So I walked to the office and to my surprise I was up for a very big responsibility. Finally being viewed as a good girl allowed people to think that they could take advantage of me. Just because they labeled me a good girl that always did her work and turned it in on time they assumed that they didn’t have to do their own work. Although there were positive experiences that came with the label good girl the disadvantages are also apparent, if not more so. Being viewed as a good girl almost always kept me out of the “in” crowd. People just assumed I wasn’t interested. They figured a goody two shoes like me couldn’t possibly be interested in anything that they were involved in. Some just thought that I would bring them down or waste their time. They never thought that taking the time to get to know me could ever become a positive experience for them. In elementary I was friends with these two girls and we were just sitting around out in the playground when this other girl starts passing out these bright yellow and orange pieces of paper. Of course the most popular kids get one first and on down the line. The next thing I know she comes over to us and hands invitations to my two friends and totally over looks me. So I stare at her for a moment and just turn away. Tears start to swell but I just turned around and walked away. Later I asked my friends what they thought the reason was that I didn
