Speech
Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience that men should be eligible for the draft age 21 and not 18. Central Idea: To explain the process of the draft, state why the age requirement should be 21, and provide possible plans of action. I. Imagine that all of the sudden you found out that you had to be whisked away from your family, sent to a training facility, and then sent off to fight in a war. Think of how you would feel knowing that you may never see your family and friends again or that you would never have the chance to go to college. IN the past, this has happened to young American men, and it can still happen to you (or your children) in the future. (Attention/Pathos) II. In my survey, 83% of you said that the drafting age should remain 18, while 17% of you think it should be increased to 21. I’m going to try to persuade you that the draft age should be raised to 21. (Reveal Topic) III. A draft would affect everyone in this room. The United States has been conflicting with the Middle East, and the draft may need to be reinstated someday. This means that any 18 year old boy in this room can be taken to war. If this occurred, we may never see our friends, or brothers, again. (Relevancy)
I. It is obvious that eighteen year old boys are not experienced enough to fight in our military. They need at least three more years to grow mentally and physically. Changing the drafting age to 21 will increase the efficiency and expertise of our military. I want to reiterate that increasing the age to 21 will ensure that the men going off to war have established a sense of independence. (Summary) A. According to a journal article titled, “Myths about the Draft” by Sara Davis most people think that they can’t be drafted if they are going to or are in college. (Evidence/Logos) B. A new bill proposed by congress representative Charles Rangle wants to raise the drat age to 21 so that men ages 21-26 will be drafted first.
