Are Soap Operas Comparable to Talk Shows?

The increase in the use of reality shows on television is horrible The production may be relatively cheap, but so is the value of the content. Would such content be useful to advertisers? The history of soap opera is traced from its infant days on radio (around 1930) to its temporary global presence on television. “One of the first realty-type shows was ‘Candid Camera’, a hidden camera TV show that premiered in 1948” (Altstadt 1). Reality shows have gained much popularity over the last few years, but they are a lot different from “Candid Camera.” In a research project by M. Coats it was says that reality shows developed in the 90’s and have taken extraordinary proportions in the whole world. Although reality shows and soap operas attract different shorts of audience, making both popular, it is questioned that reality shows may not last near as long as soap operas have lasted.

ntries worldwide! More than 51 million Americans watched the survivor final, which made it the second highest rating CBS show ever. That’s just one reality show alone, there is a lot out there! Many people criticize the lies of the TV reality shows and the programs are strongly questioned, but in spite of these doubts look at all the great success, and people getting entertained. A lot of people label soap operas as ‘rubbish’, and ‘stupid’, yet a large proportion of television viewers watch and enjoy soap operas. “Reality television provides many of the accidents of drama, in the same way that junk food provides many of the same sensations that one experiences in eating a balanced meal” (Nicolos 2). Watching a few soap operas it’s noticeable that everyone is either rich beyond belief, or dirt poor. No character is seen with “bed head” or without makeup. Another oddity that is obvious is that everyone who works has a very important job but never seems to be working. Reality is not really shown on reality shows. You don’t see these people getting up for work every day, paying their bills and supporting their families. Instead they are playing games; supposedly finding loved ones, testing their love, surviving, dating and so on. The elements of this show are more pornography then a game, soaps may “sleep around” but they don’t go as far as reality TV.
