Uncle tom's cabin

The novel that we are going to analyze is Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stow. This novel had a great impact in the pursuit of abolishing slavery in the middle of the 19th century. During this era Christianity, the self-made man and true womanhood were values that society considered to be great. In fact, during this period the second great awakening had an enormous impression in both black and white people. Both races became involved in reform movements to get rid of prostitution, alcohol and sinners, and eventually abolish slavery. As a result, in my opinion Stow in this novel made it clear that race had the most similarities between black and white followed by gender and class respectively.

Stow emphasized differences in class the least because class should not determine our religious and political beliefs towards slavery. To begin we will focus on St. Clare who is considered upper class and young master George whom is middle class. Both of these characters show a lot of compassion for the slaves. Stow describes St. Clare as caring and sentimental person towards slaves, for example, “I have the same love that I have know for all kinds of human things…”(Pg 257) Similar to young mast

Stow emphasized differences in gender more than class because women in that era had more compassion for humanity and were not as recognized and valued as men. Mr. Bird and Ms. Ophelia were considered middle class but had completely different political standings. Mr. Bird was part of the senate while Ms. Ophelia was a domestic and educated woman from the north. In the novel Mr. Bird had approved a law prohibiting anybody to help run away slaves. On the other hand, Ms. Ophelia also had her own doubts on helping and educating slaves. Note that both of these characters are educated and self-motivated except that Ms. Ophelia is dependent and pious, and senator Bird is independent and influenced in religion by his wife. Stow describes Mr. Bird as follows “poor senator was not stone or steel…he was a man noble hearted one.” (Pg 101) Senator Bird did help Eliza escape but he could have made a greater effort using his political influences. On the contrary, Stow used Ms. Ophelia’s character to show that it is possible to change our point of views regarding slavery. Stow describes Ms. Ophelia as “Worrying her self, from day to day, for her…” She is referring to Topsy. Topsy is a child that Ms. Ophelia took under her care to educate and serve as a mother figure since Topsy was an orphan. Stow was persuading her audience to be active and fully carry out their religious beliefs. Moving over to Topsy, she is very similar to Sambo both at one time in the novel had almost now differences in religious beliefs. Sambo was a slave that was trained to be savage and brutal against slaves, his own people, by his master. Sambo had no special traits he only knew how to whip slaves and be brute. Comparable to Topsy she had been brought up in an abusive and neglecting environment and had no good traits for her own. Topsy was depicted by Stow as follows “shining eyes, glittering as glass beads, moved with quick and restless glances…”(Pg 270) Although Topsy was an orphan, which during the 19th hundreds being an orphan was a great disgrace, Stow still depicted her as relatively good-looking and gracious child. On the contrary, when Stow depicted Sambo she used other adjectives such as “coarse, dark, heavy features, half brute and bad intonation.” (Pg 393) Stow uses these characters to emphasize that female slaves were not at fault for their disgraces in life, they were only victims of th
