On the other side of the political spectrum, Dinish D’Souza discusses, in his book Letters to a Young Conservative, some of the problems that he sees with our government today. His best point is revealed through his observations on the immigrant status in America today. “Immigrants provide economic benefits to America by taking jobs that most Americans refuse to take.” (D’Souza 199). This may seem a racist or prejudiced outlook to some, but it is the truth. Most cab drivers, fast food employees, and migrant workers are immigrants. D’Souza, however, is not saying that is all the immigrant is good for. Those of foreign decent can also make great doctors, lawyers, and businessmen. The immigrant himself is not harming the American economy in anyway; it is the policies that our government uses which are damaging our country. Welfare brings many immigrants to the United States. As D’Souza writes, “Certainly Americans don’t owe welfare-state entitlements to people who come here from other countries.” (D’Souza, 202). So what must be done? D’Souza says America needs to practice greater selectivity when we allow immigrants to enter the country. For example, government should invite over highly skilled professionals in the fields where they are most needed. Other countries such as Canada have used this practice, so why not America? The poor uneducated immigrants that flood our borders now most often get the low paying jobs and have poor, uneducated kids. It is a sad cycle no doubt, but providing
