Shylock’s occupation deals with lending money at high interest rates. All he thinks about is money and how to gain more riches at the cost of others. When Antonio goes to Shylock for the loan, he immediately ponders on how he can come ahead. Antonio feels terrible about not being able to help his friend, Bassanio. Bassanio needs three thousand ducats to be able to suit Portia and Shylock knows how desperately Bassanio needs the money. Instead of being understanding and kind, Shylock decides to take extremely high “interest” if the debt is not paid within a certain amount of time. Shylock personifies evil by being equated with the devil. Most of the characters see Shylock as appalling and ungodly because of his actions towards others. Jessica feels like Shylock’s house is hell and that the devil lives there. Launcelot Gobbo identifies Shylock as a kind of devil and the devil himself. Bassanio sees Shylock’s evil through the agreement with the loan and distinguishes Shylock as a “cruel devil” (IV, i, 217).

sh. Shylock is not very compassionate to Bassanio, Antonio and other clients, showing his absolute desire for wealth. Antonio and Shylock are business rivals and have extreme hatred for eachother. Antonio hates Shylock because Shylock is Jewish and runs an unfair business. Many times he abuses Shylock both physically and verbally. "Signior Antonio, many time and oft in the Rialto you have rated me about the monies and my usances. Still I have borne it with a patient shrug (For suff'rance is the badge of our tribe). You call me a mis-believer, cut-throat dog, and spet on my Jewish gabardine . . .You that did void your rheum upon my beard, and foot me as you would spurn a stranger cur over your threshold" (I, iii, 106-119)

The characters only say Shylock’s name three times. The Duke refers to him as Shylock twice during the trial and Portia also speaks it once. Most of the time Shylock is referred to as “the Jew”. Besides only being referred to as “the Jew”, many times characters would add more demeaning adjectives such as, "dog Jew" (II,viii,14) and "currish Jew" (IV,i,292).
