Nevermore Bliss
Jaycee wanted to kill herself; in fact, she yearned for the moment that she would take her own life. Her contact with people, such as her mother and father, brother and sisters, and friends, became very rare. When the phone would ring, she would not answer it. She did not want to talk, regardless of whom it could possibly be; she could not pretend that life was good or that she wanted to be alive. She laid in bed on hours without end. She would sleep all day if she were not obligated to attend school. In fact, on weekends Jaycee stayed asleep, or in bed, for over eighteen hours each day. School was all she had. She kept perfect attendance all the way up to her senior year and she’d be damned if she was going to screw that up too. She thought of her attendance as an accomplishment, even if it only meant being present everyday. Her job, as a real estate office receptionist, became a hassle. Even though her only duty was to sit at a desk and answer the phone and client’s questions, she could not handle the added pressure. Throughout the day, Jaycee would search her mind for another excuse that could hopefully get her pardoned from going in. Without any concern, she knew that if she were a no-show, then nobody woul
As she woke the next morning, she realized the place was nothing but a jail cell without the bars. The place that encircled her only seemed to make matters worse. Jaycee spent a mere three days at St. Anthony. During her stay, she hid all of her true thoughts and feelings. She did not tell any of the doctors or the other patients that she saw the picture of her suicidal attempt so clearly in her mind. Instead, she met with the doctor only once and lied that she could not stand the thought of losing her parents. The doctor’s visit was a hoax. Jaycee’s discharge papers read that Jaycee was ultimately afraid of losing her parents in the distant future. That was that. handle. But, at least, Jaycee learned that she was not bi-polar. Nevertheless, Jaycee’s quest for the right medication was prolonged and had now surpassed over two years of trying numerous prescriptions: Zoloft, Effexor, Prozac, Wellbutrin, Paxil, and the latest experiment, Lithium. The only thing she gained from the Lithium was unemployment; Jaycee’s own aunt fired her. feared a place that she had only been in for a few seconds. The room that she stood in was filled with a couple of empty couches and a television that was turned off. Rows of tables were across the room but they were unfilled as well. To the left, was a long hall lined with several doors. A nurse took Jaycee to the first closed door on the right and announced that it was hers. The nurse told Jaycee that her roommate was Michelle, but all of the girls were in the gym utilizing their playtime. Jaycee soon learned that Michelle was a young girl who heard voices and was too anxious to be touched by another. Jaycee tried to settle on her new bed but the nurse made her stand and remove her tennis shoes. Jaycee was ordered to remove the shoelaces and the nurse stood nearby to watch. The nurse told Jaycee that supposedly the shoelaces made a great string to hang yourself from the shower. Then the nurse shut the door to the room and insisted that Jaycee removed her clothes. The nurse went on to explain that the purpose was to ensure that Jaycee did not have any visible bruises or marks of abuse. The procedure was demeaning and it made Jaycee feel violated. Nevertheless, she followed the nurse’s commands and stripped down to nothing but a measly pair of red underwear. The nurse left her alone but ensured her that she would not be allowed to stay in the room all by herself. phone calls for at least the next twenty-four hours. Jaycee was not even allowed to pho
