George Mortimer Pullman: Goals of a Mastermind

“I will revolutionize this city, mark my words.”(Encyclopedia,pg.897) Words spoken from a true mastermind of his field that would do exactly what he said. George Mortimer Pullman was brought into this world in Brocton, New York in 1831. George’s mother Emily Caroline (Minton) had an uneasy time keeping her son George in school. His mother wanted him to continue doing his homework, listen to all his teachers and respect them, and be the best he could possibly be and learn as much as possible. “ Mother had always wanted him to get a proper education. I did until money was too stretched at the young, tender age of 14. My father, James Lewis, gave me permission to quit school and work at the farm supply store.”( Buder, pg.8) He was over-willing to lend a hand to his older brother and father, they worked very hard and hardly got by with no extra money.” My meager 40 dollars a year barely helped but it put a few more pennies in my families’ pocket.” (pg.10) This certainly became one of his goals he would work for in life and strive to achieve. “ My mother and eight younger siblings knew the trouble we had to go through in order to get a few crumbs on the table. Soon he was worth $ 20,000 and had more business than he could possibly handle by himself.” (Encyclopedia, Pg. 937) In his eyes, I believe he achieved his goal of getting a better job.

for three years until I was the age of 17. At the age of 17 I moved to Albion, New York in order to help his older brother start his new cabinet-making business.” (Pg. 10)

“ On 22 February 1867 a charter was granted to the Pullman Palace car company with capital of $ 1 million. Pullman was president and general manager of the new company. Field had dropped out of the firm but the new corporation was backed by two Chicago business leaders, John Crerar and Marshall Field.” (Encyclopedia, pg. 897) he had achieved yet another one of his goals but when push came to shove it would not turn out the way he planned. By 1880 Pullman had acquired nearly
