Brooklen bridge
The New York City Skyline is flooded with amazing landmarks and works of engineering magic. People who live in this great city may go back and forth across their home without even giving these wonders a second thought. To everyone else it is a city of never ending symbols of what man can do. Where did it all begin? The Modern New York had to begin at some event. In the eyes of many it was the construction of the “Great Bridge”. The monumental scale of structural steel that had never been done before. The Brooklyn Bridge. The Brooklyn Bridge is considered a brilliant feat of 19th-century engineering, and was a bridge of many firsts. It was the first suspension bridge to use steel for its cable wire. It was also the first bridge to use explosives in an underwater device called a caisson. The 3,460-foot Brooklyn Bridge dominated the competition and was the longest suspension bridge in the world. It has since been beat out, but it definitely had its day. (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/buildingbig/wonder/structure/brooklyn.html. October 25, 2002) Click photo for larger image. The bridge publicly opened on May the 24th, 1883, at 2:00
The process of building a great engineering masterpiece is laid out step by step. “Even to this day, the hearts and imaginations captured by the Brooklyn Bridges beauty can be seen in the gaze of a small child.” (“The Magnificent Brooklyn Bridge Becomes the Last Great Work of an Age.”)
