In the world hell is interpreted in many different ways. No Exit gives us an interpretation in which hell are individuals in your contact. Each individual affects other individuals in a plethora of bad ways, and people are hell for each another.
In the story No Exit the two characters Estelle and Garcin cause hell for the third character, Inez. Estelle and Garcin do all they can to make Inez as miserable as possible. For example, Garcin and Estelle know Inez does not want them to be together, and this leads to Estelle and Garcin starting to become intimate with each other to bother Inez. When Estelle and Garcin begin to make physical contact with one another Inez exclaims, “Estelle! Garcin! You must be going crazy. You’re not alone. I’m here too”(pg.36) Inez does all she can in her physical and mental power to try preventing Estelle and Garcin from
There is more than one instance in which Estelle made Garcin fell utterly uncomfortable. One of the first times is when Garcin says it is hot and begins to remove his jacket and Estelle says, “...No, please don’t. I loathe men in their shirt-sleeves.” This demonstrates that even without trying Estelle was making Garcin uncomfortable. After Estelle says this Garcin puts his jacket back on and suffers because of the unbearable heat. Garcin is suffering because of Estelle but the roles change and Estelle suffers because of Garcin.
There are many instances in which Estelle is internally hurt from the fault of Garcin. One of those times is when they meet each other.
