Pietà was painted by a Spaniard named Luis de Morales. In 1560, with oil on panel, he constructed his version of Virgin Mary holding her dead son. Morales, also know as El Divine, chose to use very few colors in this painting. Behind Mary and her son is completely black except for a small piece of the cross probably used in the crucifixion. Mary is wearing a blue hooded dress on top of a less noticeable white one. Her son, Jesus, is dressed in white robe and is quite pale himself.
