Whether in favor of or against his stand, many segments of society have shown the image of Malcolm X as a symbol of racial pride and ethnocentricity. (p23) In analyzing his role, it’s important to have this kind of well-rounded portrait available to counter myths and show him as a human being as well as an activist icon.

Malcolm X, also known as Malcolm Little, Although dead now, his spirit and legacy lives on. He became larger in death then in life. While he was alive, Malcolm X was slandered and vilified by politicians, big business, and the media because he called capitalist society in America by its proper name: racist(p43). A powerful speaker in the civil-rights movement. As Doctor Martin Luther king captured the spirit of southern black, Malcolm became the messiah of the ghettos of, Harlem, Chicago, Detroit and Los Angles(p82). He spoke the words of the Koran and his spiritual mentor Elijah Muhamad and lived it to the fullest. He taught a message of self-help, and personal responsibility. That was, and still is the message from the Nation of Islam. In 1964,however,Malcolm X broke with the Nation of Islam.

On March 8, 1964, he announced his resignation from The Nation of Islam and formed the Muslim Mosque, Inc., an Islamic movement devoted to working in the political sphere and cooperating with civil rights leaders.(p111) That same year he made his first pilgrimage to Mecca and took a second tour of several African and Arab nations. The trip was apparently transformative.. Upon his return he renamed himself El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, adopted from Sunni Islam, and announced that he had found the "true brotherhood" of man.(p113) He publicly acknowledged that whites were no longer devils, though he still remained a Black Nationalist and firm believer in black self-determination and self-organization.

He utilized newspapers, T.V, and radio to preach The Nation Of Islam message across the United States. Malcolm recruited huge numbers of members to the Nation Of Islam. The membership went from 500 in 1952 to 30,000 in 1963.(p102)

As Malcolm X began to study the teachings he was appointed a minister and national spokesmen for the nation of Islam. He established mosques in cities such as Detroit, and Harlem.

While in prison he changed his name to Malcolm X because he felt the name Little sounded to much like a slave name. It was after a visit by his brother Reginald telling of his recent conversion to the Muslim Religious organization Nation Of Islam where he started to study the teachings of Elijah Muhammad(p95).
