Beowulf - a hero?
One of the worlds, and especially Christianity’s, most important work is the poem of Beowulf, which is believed to originate from the 800th century’s Anglo-Saxon England, which is the date that most scholars and experts do agree on, however one must keep in mind that there are no certain proofs that this date may be the correct one. This work has been a great mystery ever since it surfaced in the hands of a man named Laurence Nowell in the 1600th century. No one knows really where the manuscript was before that. The manuscript follows the life of the great Geat warrior Beowulf and his great adventures, which includes fighting monsters and slaying a dragon. After being asked for help by the Danish king Hrothgar to defeat a terrible monster named Grendel, Beowulf decides to depart for Denmark with fourteen followers to rescue the Danes from this monster and descendant of the Biblical character Cain from the book of Genesis, which clearly shows the Christian aspects and influences in the manuscript, even if it is in a frightening example . The manuscript then continues the usage of Biblical scripture, suggesting that Grendel was the descendant of Cain and therefore directly
Taking up his responsibility to protect his people, Beowulf heads off to kill the creature, accepting armor and a sword to compensate for his age , accompanied by eleven men and the terrified thief as the thirteenth to guide them to the cavern. connected to “the Root of Evil” as the manuscript puts it. It is rather obvious that honor was above all during this age. Beowulf was not forced in any kind of way to prove his strength nor his honor, but still he fought monsters in Hrothgar’s kingdom, and fought against a dragon at a very respectable age. This manuscript was written a long time ago and dealt with completely different matters than today, but it still displays the human nature in an extraordinary way; we are ignorant creatures who cannot really tell right from wrong, we are easily deceived, we cannot decide what is good for us, and we are/will always be in need of extraordinary people (heroes) to straighten our lives out. Many years later, when Beowulf has become an aged king, a dragon (also known as a wyrm) comes upon his kingdom like a plague, causing destruction and death wherever he travels, The reason for the dragon’s fury is that a slave of one of Beowulf’s lords had discovered the cavern, which the dragon had been guarding, with a treasure inside and stolen a cup to bring back to his lord. Not only does he kill Grendel (and his mother later on), but he also does it in a honorable way; he decides to defeat him without using any kind of weapons since he sees that Grendel is not using any weapons during his attack in Herot, but it still would not have helped Beowulf to use weapons since Grendel had put an enchantment on all of their weapons, which Beowulf later on finds out. He takes a firm grip on Grendel’s arm and rips it off. Grendel realizes that he does not stand a chance against Beowulf, and decides to escape from Herot, mortally wounded. But after the festivities after Beowulf had killed Grendel, a new terror arises, namely Grendel’s mother. She attacks Herot, once again while they are asleep, and manages to take one of Hrothgar’s closest friends and advisor, Esher. Beowulf is furious, an
