Romeo and Juliet Movies Compared
In the dramatic play, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, two teens fall in love and marry despite the feud between their two households. Set in Verona, Italy during the late 1500’s, Romeo, a Montague, meets Juliet, a Capulet. They fall in love and marry although their families hate each other. And because of feud and the blinding self-interest of the adults, it leads to their fateful demise. The play of Romeo and Juliet is one of the most popular and most widely known play of all time. This play has been performed worldwide. In 1968, a film director, Franco Zeferelli, designed a replica of what he thought Shakespeare’s play was like. He won many Academy Awards for the movie. Then, in 1996, another film director, Baz Lurhmann, portrayed Romeo and Juliet as a contemporary version, just as Shakespeare did in his day. In conclusion, Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 version was more to William Shakespeare’s intent than Franco Zeferelli’s 1968 version. Shakespeare’s plays really had their focus on colors and pace. His plays consisted of bright colors and fast paced scene. Luhrmann’s version was quick with up beat sequences of scenes, raw emotion, vivid colors, and a contemporary setting. Luhrmann interpreted the party with vivid colors and fast paced movement, just as Shakespeare did with his own plays. In the movie, the maskers added life to the party. Mercutio, with his silly character, came to the party as a drag queen. Everyone was in costumes. The costumes added more color to the scene. The party was full of colors and fast paced dancing. Everyone was laughing and having fun. Shakespeare, as stated before, was all about color and movement. The brighter the colors and the quicker the movements, the better the play.
