The Speed of Light

Light is a form of energy which is confirmed by the fact that it can do work. It travels in straight lines called rays. According to Isaac Newton, these rays are formed by a stream of high – speed particles which move in a straight line. However, light diffracts as it goes through very narrow openings or very small bodies, which suggests that light is transferred through space by waves rather than particles. These waves have an extremely small wavelength which is why their diffraction can only be noticed when light passes by small bodies or openings.

It can travel through a vacuum at approximately 300,000,000 m/s. This was determined by the fact that light from the sun passes through 93,000,000 miles of empty space on its way to the Earth. This was first determined by the Danish astronomer Roemer during his study of motion of satellites of Jupiter. He calculated the speed of light by determining that the light from Jupiter’s satellites takes about 1,000 seconds to travel 186,000,000 miles across the Earth’s orbit. Then he divided 186,000,000 miles by 1,000 seconds which gave him 186,000 miles per second as speed of light in a vacuum. This speed plays an important part in theories of matter because it is the greatest speed

any form of matter or energy can have. Speed of light in different mediums varies, for example, in air it is a little slower, but it is considerably slower in other transparent substances such as water.

At the present time, most scientists believe that the correct answer should be “no”. Some say, consequent to Einstein’s theory of relativity that states that nothing with mass -- like people or things -- can ever go faster than light, that it would be impossible for a person to reach such speeds because anything that has mass requires an amount of energy to accelerate and to accelerate at such a high speed would require an infinite amount of energy and even then, the person would go to 99% the speed of light, but will never be 100%. In fact, if mass was able to come to those limits it would probably vanish in space and for a person, reflection in a mirror would completely disappear and all the neurons in the brain would not be able to leap their gaps.
