“ Gross National Product (GDP) is the value of all goods and services produced domestically in the economy, regardless of the nationality of the owners of the factors of production”.It is the most common measure of a country’s economic performance. The GDP is made up of a few areas such as consumer expenditure, which is spending by the household on goods and services (durable and non durable), investment expenditure, which is a total outlay of all capital goods, government expenditure which measures spending by the state on current goods and services and finally the GDP is comprised of net exports which is the difference between exports and imports of goods and services. While the GDP is an indicator of economic performance, it also can provide a very incomplete measure of economic output. GDP measures the net output or the value added of an economy by measuring goods and services. However, this measurement only includes goods and services that have been purchased by money. It excludes output that is not bought or sold and these are left unmeasured. Such things like leisure and pollution are left out of the GDP.
