Entrepruenurship

It is said that the Generation X population, (those individuals born between 1965-1975) are the entrepeneur’s of today. The traits of this age group are such that independence and creativity lead them to a heightened interest in starting their own businesses. Harold Earle, of St. John’s Newfoundland is a prime example of an individual who has put their creativity to work. Mr. Earle not only started a bicycle repair business back in 1988 (AICS, 1999, para. 3), but is now seeking to start a second business; a bicycle touring company. Throughout the article there is evidence of strong entrepeneurial, decision making, and controlling characteristics shown in Mr. Earle’s character. There are, however, some decisions and business planning strategies that Mr. Earle should work on, in order to create a successful recreational business.

Does Harold Earle have the traits of an entrepreneur?

By definition an entrepreneur is “someone who creates ‘an innovative economic organization for the purpose of gain or growth under conditions of risk and uncertainty’ ” (Dessler & Starke, 2003 p.102). Mr. Earle, according to the above annotation is clearly an entrepreneur. He has successfully, come up with the idea fo

Earle set idealist goals, which are good in some ways as shown above, but he was so stuck to these goals he did not make a contingency plan. What if Earle does not get the bank loan? What if the funding from ACOA is delayed? Earle states that he will run the tours even if there is only one participant (AICS, 1999). His reasoning for not canceling the tour is that it would leave dissatisfied customers and may put out a bad name on the company. Will it be any better, both financially and publically if only one or two people attend each tour? “Earle recognized that the future of the company would hinge on the success of these multi-day tours.” (AICS, 1999, para. 26) Earle did make the correct decision to seek advice from professional marketing agencies, however, what if the people of Newfoundland and Labrador do not want to go on a mountain biking tour? The group feels that the article does not portray that Earle thought about those ‘what if’ questions.

Mr. Earle needs to appoint people to be responsible for signing for payments (Dessler and Starke, 2004). This is especially important as he intends to have many offices across the province, and he will be unable to sign for everything (Donovan, 1993). It might also be important to put someone in charge at each office, who can organise things; like collecting the receipts and bank statements, to send to Mr. Earle. This issue is not addressed in the case study (Donovan).

Mr. Earle needs to also review his payments to vendors and employees, to ensure that he is not paying too much (Dessler & Starke, 2004). This would include shopping around for the best price on various pieces of equipment. Reviewing his policies is also something that he should take on (Dessler & Starke), to make sure they are consistent with his goals and objectives for the company.

In short, yes, Mr. Earle obviously has many of the traits held by fellow entrepreneurs worldwide. One could conclude that his success can be attributed to his possession and utilization of these traits.
