A Guide to Effective Descriptive Writing

Descriptive writing can sometimes have a unique power and appeal to it. A purely descriptive essay is to involve the reader enough so he or she can actually visualize the things being described. Several ingredients are essential in writing descriptions. The following guide will show you the many key concepts and resources that you should utilize in your descriptive writing.

In fairy tales we often gaze at magnificent 200 page books that contain hundreds of stories for children. While we sit and think of far distant places with kings, queens, glass slippers and magic carpets, it can be an immense process to take descriptions of people, places, events, and subjects, and formulate written characterization of such actions or memories. With the bright blue skies that look like reflections of large oceans, white clouds that encompass the heavens like soft cotton and characters who dress in beautiful dresses with deep purple and bright greens. These types of images stayed with us when we were children, and remain with us to present. 'I stepped into the room and coughed at the musty smell that felt like it was already clogging my throat. I looked around. The yellow paint was peeling off the walls in strips and bubbles, exposing the grayish wall beneath. The battered, deep brown wood floors creaked as I stepped farther in. There were stains in several places on the wood, rust-colored smears that smelled metallic when I bent to look more closely at them. They looked like old blood. Dust webs floated in the air, stirred by the faint breeze I could feel coming in the door behind me. They were attached to the ceiling and fixtures somewhere in the shadows above my head. Save for the groans of the floorboards beneath my feet, there was no sound. It was like the air smothered sounds and choked the breeze. I saw another door on the other side of the room, cracked open a few inches, but I couldn't see what was beyond it, or hear if anyone was there. I felt another faint stir of air, this time from that second door, and there was the strong smell of mice.'
