Do the arts reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of a society as the speaker contends? I disagree with this sweeping contention because no all of the arts are created for the aim of revealing the hidden ideas and impulses of a society. Yet through close scrutiny of these arts we can find out some social phenomena hidden behind the superficial motivations of the arts.

Admittedly, many great literatures did reveal the ideas and impulses of a society which were perceived by the authors through their own life experiences in their contemporary society. One of the most influential novels named Uncle Tom's Cubin is a case in point. The author described the miserable life of the kind Uncle Tom and the evil of slavery and then aroused the consciences of American people. Surely, the motivation of Uncle Tom's Cubin represented the ideas of people who advocated a


nti-slavery. On the other hand, several other versions of Uncle Tom's Cubin, which the original theme was altered in order to justify the existence of slavery, emerged in the southern states. The strange phenomenon reflected the very conflicts between southern slave owners and those who advocated emancipation. Furthermore, when talk about painting and music, we can also find many masterpieces which served for the aim of conveying the ideas and convictions of a society. For instance, the themes of many paintings and music in the mid-age were about the tenets in the Bible which were the dominant believes in Europe at that time.

However, in today's mundane world, some forms of arts such as pop songs and Hollywood films serve as pure entertainments and reflect little, if any, on the social issues. For example, Many Hollywood films, such as 'Terminator', '
