As Freedom Crumbles

America-- The great land of freedom. Despite the continuous struggles of minorities in this country, this great land continues in its cycle of oppression. As America sails into the new millennia and a new era begins, so does a new chain of subjugation. The issue, this time, is whether there should be a constitutional amendment to define marriage as being “between a man and a woman.” Not only does this defy the 14th amendment, but it also sets a precedent making homosexuals second class citizens. Those in favor of a “marriage protection” amendment will use tradition and morality as foundation for their arguments. However, the United States itself was founded on a break from tradition, and the Constitution was written to protect rights of every American individual, not to deny them.

All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within


The first amendment states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” For this reason, the government recognizes and sanctions many religions. These include pagan religions such as Wicca. Wiccan Religion allows any two people who have love for each other to be bound in wedlock. Thus an amendment to ban this connection would abridge the rights of a religion. In fact, many state laws are currently abridging the constitutional rights of these citizens already.

If an amendment to ban Gay marriage is instated, it will be the first time that the Constitution will have been used to transform a minority in the United States into second class citizens. Time after time the Constitution has been used to protect those who needed it. Women were second rate citizens, property, before the Constitution stepped in to protect them. African Americans suffered the same fate. The Constitution was made as a frame of rules to protect every single American citizen despite race, religion, gender, or creed.
