Flashes of Lightning
It all ended with a final shout as Laura and her two year old daughter left the house. Andy sat there in misery as he watched her go. This was the end of a six year marriage. Laura and her daughter Dana moved to New Jersey where Laura’s mother lived. This is where Dana would start a whole new life, a life of choices of who to be with, a life of traveling back and forth from New Jersey and Florida and Vice Versa, a life of flying, which she grew to hate. Sixteen years have gone by of plane flights to the point that Continental airlines know her by her first name. Each plane flight seemed to build a concern which later developed into a fear of flying, a fear of anticipation for what was waiting on the other end, a disappointed mother or disappointed father on the other end because their daughter wasn’t with them all the time. For Dana, another concern grew in her mind each time she boarded the plane, the fear of being a child all alone on a 270 passenger aircraft 6-8 times a year, the fear of turbulence and strangers. As time grew on, it was Dana’s decision to move to Florida to be with her Dad after her Mom decided to remarry. With honors, third in her class, and aspirations to go to medical school, she decided to a
As she wiped the shed tears from her face, she jolted in fear as her alarm clock had gone off. It was time to start a new day. Traumatized by the realistic dream she had just awakened from, she got dressed and headed to the hospital. All the way to work, she thought about how that dream seemed to last for eternity, when in reality, it probably only lasted minutes. As she pulled into the hospital parking garage she was relieved that her daughter would never have to fly back and forth to see each parent because Dana and her husband Michael were happily married. After Dana graduated Medical school and pursued her career in Obstetrics and Gynecology, she realized how amazing it is to have the security and unity of a family. All of the sudden, Dana’s attention was quickly diverted to a large flash of lightening that had appeared to go through the plane that illuminated the interior of the cabin as if blinded by a camera flash. With an hour or so left of the flight, she decided to try and sleep through the storm. She was later awakened to a familiar sound of the plane’s tires striking the runway. She was relieved as she disembarked from the plane and wondered why everyone was still so quiet. It suddenly dawned on her that she had never heard the announcement that they had begun a descent to land. As she walked down the corridor, she looked at her watch and realized that the plane was an hour and a half early. She proceeded to baggage claim with the anticipation of surprising her mother. The airport had a still; stale atmosphere and the only people in baggage claim were passengers from flight 315. She decided to take a taxi to surprise her mother. Upon entering the front door with much excitement, she realized that no one was home. She then heard the voices of her mother, step-father, and little sister come in through the garage as if very saddened by something. The weekend goes by but there seems to be distance between Dana and her New Jersey family. They did not spend the quality time together that they normally did. Then it was time to depart on flight 315 bound for Tampa, Florida. Around North Carolina, again, Dana
