St. John
Saint John the Baptist is the patron saint of baptism, Jordan, the city of Florence, monastic life, tailors and highways. He was the prophet who prepared the way for Jesus Christ and who baptized Jesus in the Jordan River. Saint John is known as “the man sent from God” and the Precursor or Forerunner of the Lord. St John the Baptist was born six months prior to Jesus because he came to tell the world that Jesus was God and the true Light, and he also wanted to tell the world about the truth of redemption. In art, John is depicted as a hermit, sometimes holding a lamb and carrying a staff that ends in a cross. Saint John the Baptist feast day is on June 24. John was martyred on August 29. The life and ministry of Saint John are told in the Gospels. In the New Testament, John is the last High Priest of the Old Testament. The Scripture says that John is the representative of mankind and as the High Priest in the era of the New Testament he passed all the sins of the world onto Jesus. He ministered the high priesthood of the Old Testament. Saint John the Baptist was a descendant of the High Priest Aaron and the last
Saint John began is public ministry of preaching repentance and baptizing in Jordon at about A.D. 28. Many people thought of him as the Messiah, but he said he was not. John also said, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit”. His basic message about Jesus was that “He must increase, while I decrease”. Saint John baptized Jesus in the Jordon River. When Jesus came to be baptized, the heavens split and the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus like a dove and a voice said, “Thou art my beloved son with thee I am pleased”. Jesus later told people that there was no prophet greater than John. Nothing of John’s early years is known. He was about 32 years old when he began his spiritual mission. He wore only a garment made of camel’s hair tied with a leather girdle, and he survived on locusts and wild honey. John withdrew into the desert near Jordan to fast and pray. He lived in the wilderness alone because as the representative of all mankind, John could not live
