She Is Gone
I opened my eyes to a snoring great-aunt sleeping next to me. I looked around and noticed that I was no longer in my great grandmother’s room. I called her Lang-Lang. The rain had stopped and I could smell food lingering in the air. What am I doing here? It was daylight and my Lang-Lang usually woke me to eat. Where is she? I panicked and woke up my Great Aunt Eeling and hysterically asked, “Where is my Lang-Lang?”With hesitation she replied, “She’s gone.” “What do you mean she’s gone?”, I asked in panic. “She never leaves without me!” She explained to me why there were so many people in the house last night. Why my grandparents came back from America with no notice. While she was talking, I rolled over with tears in my eyes. I understood what she was saying. As I rolled over, my eyes took a glimpse outside the window and saw a huge moth. This moth that was hanging outside the window was the size of a VCR tape. It was humongous! Believe me, it was not a butterfly. I felt so much sadness that I couldn’t tell her about the moth. I realized from that moment on that my life would be changed forever. That night, I was lying in my Lang-Lang’s room. There were so many people in the r
I was born out of wedlock. My parents never got married. My dad ran away after finding out that my mom was pregnant. He knew that my grandpa would literally kill him. Out of shame and embarrassment, my grandparents sent my mom to a province far from their home. My Lang-Lang took care of my mom until she gave birth to me. She then took on the responsibility of taking care of me until I was adopted by my mom’s oldest sister. All my life until my Lang-Lang died, she protected and cared for me. Anyone who tried to hurt me had better start running for their life because she would beat the crap out of them. I remember playing a game with my cousins outside the front of the house. I lost the game and I ran to her crying. Next thing you know, she came with rocks in her hands and started throwing them at my cousins. She was a feisty, little, old Filipino lady, but she was my Lang-Lang. oom. I didn’t know why my grandparents, who emigrated to the U.S from the Philippines, were suddenly visiting. I remember so clearly, like it was yesterday. I was lying on top of my Lang-Lang’s treasure chest. She would not let anyone look inside that thing. Whenever she received a present that came from the U.S. she would keep it there. That thing must have contained a ton of stuff. I remember being so hot with a fever. My grandmother was sitting next to her bed holding her hands and my grandma’s sister was sitting on the foot of the bed rubbing my Lang-Lang’s feet. I wanted these people to just leave the room so I could lie next to her. For three days, people came in and out of the house. At night, there were more people visiting than in the morning. I didn’t really know what was going on but I kne
