Concept of self and social improvement

Concept of Self and Social Improvement in "A Connecticut Yankee at King Arthur's Court", "The Great Gatsby", and "Sjecas li se, Doli Bel"

The Great Gatsby - theme - The story of a young man whose dream of loving a young woman is ruined by the difference in their social statuses, and his turning to crime to make enough money to impress her.

Sjecas li se, Doli Bel - theme - The growing-up of a boy from the suburbs of Sarajevo.

The idea of improvement is inherent in all people, and has been thoroughly discussed and realized in various ways within different cultures. However, if we are to concentrate on the idea of self-improvement as a cornerstone of the American society and its realization in the American dream, we must begin with the life and work of its founding father, Benjamin Franklin. He proposed the idea of intensive work on self-improvement for the benefit of the whole society, emphasizing the fact that the very practice of this idea creates an air of virtue, which is important enough, or even crucial for the attainment of the virtue itself. Through his "Project of arriving at moral perfection" (Benjamin Franklin, "Autobiography"), he provided the American people with the example of how to achieve o

2.3 If they can improve themselves can they improve society?

Considering the guiding principles of the three works presented here and the definition of the studied concept, we come to the conclusion that self-improvement is not, or at least it should not be, a mere material betterment of one's standing, but that it implies a more profound process of reaching a moral, spiritual, and social contentment, and if we try to apply a scheme of such an improvement on the whole society, we should be able to develop a better community. But, since the idea of self-improvement has been corrupted, it can naturally lead only to a corrupted society.

Yankee - Yankee's attempt to improve the society succeeds, but only on the technological and organizational level: "Slavery was dead and gone, all men were equal before the law, taxation had been equalized. The telegraph, the telephone, the phonograph, the typewriter, the sewing machine, and the thousand willing and handy servants of steam and electricity were working their way into favor." (Mark Twain, 'Yankee'). On the other hand, he does not succeed in changing the way of 'training' of the people in the manner that he wants to, that is, he fails to impose his scheme and the rational way of thinking which would ensure the progress of the country in the future: 'They were good men, everyone, but they had two defects which I couldn't cure, and so had to wink at: they wouldn't lay aside their armor, and they would 'knock down' fare- I mean rob the company.'(Mark Twain, 'Yankee')
