The crucible (a book review)
The Crucible, a play that was written to remember a part of our history. It is a play that was published to remind people about the tragedy that happened years ago, the Salem witch trials that occurred in 1692. I have heard stories and lectures from this tragic event and still, I find it very unbelievable. I personally chose this book because I was curious of how the author, Arthur Miller, retell history through writing a play. Interesting, unbelievable, cruel and lack of judgment are some of the words that came to my mind after reading this book. Interesting because I saw how the society before differ from our society now; unbelievable because I never thought that a collection of girls can make a town fall apart; cruel because of the punishment, which is hanging; and lack of judgment, as the court convicted people only based on the girls’ accusations without a fair trial. Although the story of the book is clearly about the Salem witch trials, there are certain questions that crossed my mind while reading. These are questions such as when and why the book was written, and I also asked myself… what drawn the writer, Arthur Miller, into retelling history through a play? As I go along
The Crucible is one of the known and best selling books from the first time it came out, until now. Personally, I admire the way Arthur Miller retold the story of the Salem witch trials. It was a very clever way to retell and relive history in a tragic and dramatic way. It catches the audience/reader’s attention because it can relate to our own and personal beliefs and experiences. However, it does not have accurate information as far as the age and personality of the characters are concerned; although, the place and the way the society were portrayed accurate enough for the reader to learn about theocracy and what the beliefs of people were. On the other hand, I would recommend this book to people that like reading drama and tragedy; however, for those who seek more accurate information about the Salem witch trials, there are other books can give more accurate information than The Crucible. The story that was written was not as accurate as history. Based on books about the Salem witch trials, nineteen people and two dogs were convicted and hanged for witchcraft. Also, Abigail was only eleven while John Proctor was nearly sixty. The story between John Proctor and Abigail was made up so the play would be more interesting to the audience. The writer only included this affair as his central plot device, another story within the story that can make a lot of viewers/readers more interested. This affair between Abigail and John Proctor, in my opinion, is one of the strengths of the story. It is the jealousy at the root of hysteria that constitutes a dramatic contrivance. It cannot only relate to the way the society is back then but it can also relate to our society nowadays. People are still feeding with jealousy and greed. Because of this, people get hurt both emotionally and physically. The story began in 1692, in a theocratic village called Salem, located in Massachusetts. One morning, a group of girls suddenly fell ill. The extremely religious town wondered what was wr
