First black physics

Edward Alexander Bouchet was the first prominent black in the field of physics. He was born on September 15, 1852 in New Haven Connecticut. Edward Bouchet was the youngest child of William and Susan Bouchet and had three sisters.

At this time, blacks were not being educated in this Country, no mater how smart and talented they were, they did not have opportunities to perform at their best; to make matters worst he was living in the south which was very segregated. Edward had a lot of talent but as a black man in the field of physics he had many barriers that stopped him from conducting scientific research and achieving professional recognition.

He spent his career working in high schools that had limited resources and poorly equipped labs so he could not perform many experiments. Because he was a colored person white colleges would not consider him for a teachi


Over many years Edward Alexander Bouchet would teach in many parts of the country including St Paul’s Normal and Industrial school, Principal of Lincoln High school of Gallipolis, Ohio, teaching physics and maths at St.Louis Summer High School, the first high school for blacks west of the Mississippi. In 1916 he returned to New Haven where he died in his boyhood home at 94 Bradley Street on October 28, 1918.

Mr. Bouchet was very well known in New Haven’s Negro community serving as a deacon of the Temple Street Church, the oldest church for blacks in the city.

Edward Alexander Bouchet became the first ever black in the country to be nominated to Phi Beta Kappa but he was not elected until 1887 at the University of Vermont.
